Challenges

 Communication of the Future

Context: Our world is changing rapidly. Longevity and aging affect the sustainability of the collective pension system. There is a tendency towards individualisation. We must deal with unprecedentedly low-interest rates which negatively affects our pension coverage ratio.

Besides this, we see a huge impact of new disruptive technologies, for example, artificial intelligence (in advisory and wealth management), increasingly smarter chatbots and virtual/mixed reality feed a consumer trend of instant, personalized and understandable communication on demand.

A service provider must face all these challenges in their way of communicating!

Question: How can we make use of the latest technologies and business concept innovations to:

• Make our customers loyal and engaged
• Engage the younger generation to take action for their future pension and financial wellbeing

Challenge Owner: Raoul Willms (Project Director APG 2017), APG.

APG is the biggest Pension service provider in the Netherlands and one of the biggest in the world. APG manages the pension assets of around 4.5 million Dutch citizens. We perform a responsible task for one in every five Dutch families by providing their retirement plans. A responsible task that we are aware of every day. We invest 443 billion euros (August 2016) for pension funds with the greatest possible care.

 Advice of the future

Context: Renovating or buying a house is often a stressful and complex thing. Renovating/building with sustainability in mind is even more complex. Can I use solar panels or should I install a heat pump? What’s the expected revenue, what are the additional financing costs? Sustainability, construction knowledge, financial knowledge, legal constraints and applicable subsidies become entangled. Where to start unravelling? In today’s world where technological innovations like artificial intelligence, chatbots, API’s, platforms et cetera are evolving at a fast pace it will be easier to get thorough insight into all these variables such as sustainability and adjacent financing possibilities.

Question:How could you help our (potential) customers and/or advisors to get a better insight in the possibilities of sustainable housing. How would you design the “Advice of the future”?

Areas of interest might include:
• Insights in sustainable options (e.g. solar panels, heat pumps et cetera)
• Possibilities of and roads to subsidies
• Insights in financial costs and benefits

There’s a lot of publicly available data that could be used/combined. We will provide you with some pointers when needed.

Challenge Owner: Cynthia Tulp (VP Brand, Marketing & Innovation), Obvion.

At Obvion we believe that people are happier when they can live comfortably in a nice home. We contribute to this by helping people to realize their housing dreams and solving their housing dilemmas. To achieve this we offer meaningful mortgages and support consumers in acquiring and retaining their homes. With a professional drive and in-depth market knowledge. 600 employees work at Obvion in Heerlen (NL), serving 200.000 home-owners.

 Citizen of the future

Due to upcoming regulation changes at the EU level (GDPR), the whole industry that is using digitization as the core asset will shift dramatically. The impact of GDPR in a nutshell is that as of 28 May 2018, that all data collected on a subject (e.g. a citizen, a patient, a consumer…) will be the property of that individual. This will revolutionize the environment in which many organizations operate. It will trigger new innovations in various areas within the private sector, but will certainly generate more radical approaches in the public sector. The healthcare industry is undergoing massive change in digitization, but this new core principle puts them into certain dilemmas. The main challenge is whether this new law will make the healthcare institutes vulnerable or not. Their core business revolves around collecting, analyzing and using patient data.

Question: What would be an innovative way for a healthcare institute to provide patients with ownership of their data without jeopardizing the expertise of the healthcare service provider? Try to come up with ideas and a smart concept making a healthcare institute ready for this new era and the patient the rightful owner of his/her data.

 Ethical trading of the future

Context: In an increasingly digital world, the aspect of trust is becoming more and more important. Historically, it was easy to verify if someone was trustworthy. But with the global approach of today and tomorrow, this task gets more and more difficult. But that shouldn’t stop entrepreneurship altogether. We need more entrepreneurs to overcome tomorrow’s challenges, but these new organizations need to be able to rely on a safety net of trust and ethics in business.

Question: How can we apply technology to make sure that the partners that you work and do business with are trustworthy and secure? How can you make sure, in a digital world, the company you’re interacting with are who they say they are? And how can we get rid of loopholes in the system to raise the general confidence level of doing business in a digital world?

Challenge Owner: KVK

General Information

Welcome to Hack4SmartServices

It shouldn’t be a surprise when we say the world is changing fast. Digitization is becoming the core of all new and existing businesses. The reason for it is deeply rooted in the way we operate as human beings. We’re used to changing technologies, but when technology is changing so fast and deeply as it does today, it does not only change the game, it changes the rules of the game. Many businesses see business models they held on to for years, being challenged. On the other hand, technology provides so many new opportunities as well. If only you could grasp both the technology as well as the business model. If only, you could design the way the future would look like… If only, you could challenge yourself to become a part of that very future… If only…

WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

During the hackathon you will tackle one of the challenges above, using technology. In a small team of 4-6 people, you come up with a solution and work out a proof-of-concept and business plan. Throughout the weekend coaches will help you with different aspects: how to use smart technology, set up experiments, analyze data and build algorithms, write software, make a business case and pitch your idea.

WHO SHOULD PARTICIPATE?

If you have an entrepreneurial spirit and/or a passion for technology, we would love to have you on board. We want to bring together people with different backgrounds: data scientists, engineers, software coders, user experience experts, marketeers, business people, investors … We are looking for students as well as professionals. You can register as a team or as an individual. In the latter case, we will link you with other participants that have complementary skills, so you form a great team.

WHY SHOULD YOU PARTICIPATE?

You will discover new technology and meet a lot of people. You will learn how you can transform an idea into a real product. The best teams will be supported after the hackathon and might kick off their own tech start-up. And most of all, there are great prizes up for grabs!

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a hackathon?
A hackathon is best described as an “invention marathon”. Anyone who has an interest in technology attends a hackathon to learn, build & share their creations over the course of a weekend in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. You don’t have to be a programmer and you certainly don’t have to be majoring in Computer Science.
Who can participate?
The Interaction of the Future hackathon is open to the public: everyone is welcome to participate.
Can we work in teams?
Teams with interdisciplinary skills are typically the most successful ones – a suggestion for a good team mix is to have members with these skill sets: User Experience and Design, Business and Marketing, Software Development, Data Analytics, …
What if I don’t have a team?
No problem. There will be an open window at the beginning of the competition when teams can be formed with other registered participants.
What if I don’t have an idea?
That’s normal. Most people don’t have an idea before they get to the event. But once you start talking to other people, you might come up with something. You can also work with someone else on his or her idea if you like it. And there will be prizes at the event which might help give you some ideas. Don’t worry about it, you’ll find something to work on.
What are the exact rules of engagement?
A hackathon is by definition an open innovation event which means that you will collaborate with others to come up with new innovative ways. We do understand that sometimes you may have other questions or concerns, so here you will find the official rules and code of conduct.
Will there be food?
Absolutely! Your meals for the weekend will be free and there’ll be plenty of snacks and drinks to keep you energized.
Where can I sleep?
The Brightlands Smart Services Campus will be opened during the whole event! We reserved 60 tents (including air beds) for all participants and will be staying inside the building. These beds are offered for free to the first 60 participants indicating they want to make use of this offer while registering for the hackathon.
Important! Remember to bring your own sleeping bag, pillow and toiletries.
